2023.03.28 13:40 da_z3d I just need a minute to vent about my cats health and my housemates contribution to it
I found out today my cat is diabetic. She's not overweight, she's actually lost weight which was one of the indications and has been excessively hungry. She is older, I adopted her as an older cat so I've always been very mindful of what I feed her, and has a weak back leg due to a preexisting injury when I adopted her. She's been through a lot, and I am extremely mindful of her care.
The reason I'm here is bc during the check-up my vet asked if I give her a lot of treats and/or human food. *I* do not. However, my housemate regularly leaves old takeaways, chips, sweets etc all over their bedroom floor and rarely takes out their bins. Their door handle is broken so her door won't stay closed, and I try my best to keep my cat (and landladies dog) out but they're animals faced with a room full of rancid junk food, they're going to be persistent and idk what to do??? Every other day I am wrestling the animals out of my housemates' room to try and stop them from scavenging on who even fucking knows what like little racoons???????
I do not at all blame my housemate for my cats' health, I don't blame anyone or anything. She is older, and these things happen. But I am so MAD bc I have been begging my housemate to throw the old food away and trash, this being one of the reasons (that and the fact we have ants all over the house and had started to get maggots. It initially wasn't contained to their bedroom, they would leave trash all over the house. Rancid, rot-able, trash).
So yeah, the vet told me that this has been a main, if not the main, contributor to my cat developing diabetes.
My own health has taken a massive toll due to all of this, and in order to stop the place from getting rancid I need to clean honestly every second day, and it takes HOURS. It's a big house. And now I find out that not only has it affected me directly, my well-being, my time and comfort, but my cat has now been pulled into it and in such a major way??? That her health is now at risk because someone else can't be fucked to clean up after themselves?????
Yes, I have spoken to them about their cleanliness. A number of times, frequently, in every way I can to try and get the message across. Once their response was to threaten suicide, so you can see how well that works.
I'm fucking done.

2023.03.28 13:39 sobaka770 Blizzard is right ignoring the feedback (especially from prominent streamers)
I know the discussion on this forum ebbs and flows but after consuming way too much beta content (all characters to level 15+) and follow-up videos I have to say:
Blizzard is totally right ignoring PoE and D2 streamers with their expert advice. These people are
great because they dedicate a lot of time to this game and obviously love the genre, putting out a lot of interesting content.
Also - these people are
the worst because they are too close to the object of their love. It's like a copper investigating a murder of a sibling or a self-diagnosing doctor - they should be kept aside.
By the way for some of you, Youtubers, (you know who you are): thanks for telling us that D4 sucks in one video (I give it 6/10!), that it might just be the best thing ever (up to 9/10 with my advice!) in another and, also, here are top 5 classes in Beta and top 10 builds per class in Beta all in for 5 hours of Youtube content. Yeah, I'm talking mostly about PoE streamers latching on D4 Beta popularity spike to swing at both sides and make some money off it. I respect the hustle but also - at least try to be genuine and not an algo-sellout? Or just go back to PoE, there is a reason why that game has a much smaller (if much more hardcore) audience - D4 was never for you.
I mean is D4 perfect? No, it's not, but after playing a quarter of game on basically Normal difficulty the feedback I see is horrible and aimed only at mostly one kind of people - min maxers and build optimizers (i.e. people who would spend 10000 hours in a loot game). I mean look at this:
- Dungeons are not random enough - seriously not a concern in a game where there are 100 different dungeons and we've seen only 20% of a single tileset area that we repeated for 4-5 characters in a row. Story dungeons were all rather unique and we wouldn't do all these dungeons in one go if other acts were open to proceed.
- Actual issue: The main concern for min-maxers is that they cannot optimize their farming speed rushing for the boss then resetting the game and doing it a hundred times over. What a fun gameplay loop... They also want to "figure out" the random layout to feel a sense of superiority I guess, because I definitely don't consider it a skill. I mean does anyone really care about how random D3 rifts are while their screen explodes for trillions of damage? No - because rifts do allow to just kill monsters in the most optimal way while dungeons with objectives don't despite being a more interesting design.
- No minimap overlay - yeah, let's spend time creating a beautiful world and then dump a huge 2D sprite map on top of it.
- Actual issue: same as above, only care about farming speed vs actual game design and thought. Yes, it's faster with a map on top, it also means that pretty much that the game is so easy that you no longer care about on screen action and can just port around the map and kill stuff while looking for an exit. To me - that's not a real challenge or fun end-game gameplay. I actually kind of liked Inferno in D3 being brutally unfair at some points (minus AH bull**** and all that it led to of course). I'd like to be able to have that level of challenge in those dungeons with affixes. If max level dungeons can be more about skill at least for major elite and boss encounters - it should defeat the minimap overlay purpose as well as map randomization.
- Other concerns that fall under that category: world bosses (cannot farm alone forever and have to be on time), open world mob density etc. - anything that WASTES time exploring and just kill as fast as possible to get those 0.0000001% legs faster. It's not a waste - it's the core gameplay, mate.
- Concerns over itemization - 25 levels in we are already theorycrafting and spending hours obsessing over meaningless stats that will become obsolete in 30 minutes of act 2.
- Actual issue: theorycrafting is what some people like in these games. I call it min-maxing and while I think the game should support OP builds and cater to that audience, it shouldn't be a pillar of game design.
- Most people don't care about having the absolute best char or an optimized build. Having a variety of fun viable builds can satisfy more people and make everyone feel kinda smart without going on Youtube. That makes theorycrafters cringe because there is nothing to solve and they cannot make hours of content on builds alone. But it's a GOOD THING!
- Does anyone really prefer to go to YouTube and watch a person tell you to farm Countess in D2 for runeword "Stealth" and spec into fire trap on an Assassin to basically trivialize Normal difficulty or would you rather discover that build on your own? Or actually have more than 2 viable builds per class that you can mix and match and still have fun? Change it up when getting a great item and not repeating content to get preset items that someone told you are the best option? Maybe if you want to push max difficulty you could consult a guide and have an option to respec that doesn't require creating a new char?
- Modern games are solved within days of being published. We are no longer in 2000s with internet access speed measured in Kbps. You cannot replicate that experience of not knowing because everything is available to you within the first week - all best builds, items and enemies are datamined and published on Reddit (and not some obscure gaming forum). That's why you can never really have Vanilla WoW or D2. It's not because some itemization tricks - it's just that a same game today cannot exist.
I can go on, but I think the post is long enough. I know this may not be a popular opinion but as you may have figured out I don't care for speed clearing and min-maxing or excessive theorycrafting. I get that audience and I think there is "enough" of that in the game without becoming overbearing already today. Within the first year this can all be cleaned up and balanced without major fuss.
As for streamers and Youtubers - they want your clicks, instead of you playing and thinking for yourself. And the truth is - right now I'd rather play D4 (or D3 or even D2 Normal/Nightmare) while I'd rather watch someone play PoE (or D2 Hell) because it's as daunting and as fun as a working a second job. I think a successful ARPG game does right by giving everyone a chance to kill, loot and feel a little bit smart without swinging for extreme optimization or speed clearing.
There are some genuine things Blizzard can improve in the 2 months before release. UI could use a polishing touch on PC, Elites and some of their abilities are not clearly visible, melee is under tuned and of course the Necro skeleton glow is unacceptable. But the game is definitely fun, with clear good decisions made in comparison to D3 in terms of story and feel. Most of its social and dungeon aspects actually work well as-is and the 25+ content seems enticing already considering that we've seen only Act 1.
Bar some connection issues or a major late-game mistake or monetization bait and switch - this is obviously a winner for Blizzard. So good job, design team, for actually sifting through feedback cause most of it as seen in past 2 weeks - is frankly cringe.

2023.03.28 13:38 hearthealthqs Not sure how to react to this situation…what would you do?
So I started working full-time about a year ago now. It’s my first job out of college and it’s 100% remote.
The job progresses by levels. I’m a “I”, and after that is a II, III, and Senior. I do much more work than a I is supposed to do (both level and complexity), but the remote part is a major pro for me so I don’t want to complain. Anyway, to get to the point. I have a coworker “Beka” (Senior) who is a prime example of the a-hole who does little to no work but has a big mouth. Not going to get into too much detail, but I do much, much more work for less pay.
Part of her big mouth is also that she complains about every “personal” issue to our boss. One day she essentially tells me she doesn’t give a shit about the job and her husband comes first, and the next she puts a play on for our boss: cries and says she feels she’s not “giving it her all”. He starts assigning her essentially no work, makes exceptions for her, and she says she’ll change her work hours 7-4 instead of most people 8-5. She typically gets offline around 3:30, and lies about starting at 7, she’s on at around right before everyone else gets on and is never really online anyway.
To get to my point: I stay up late and feel nauseous in the morning so I’ve been starting around 8:30-9ish for a while. Yesterday my boss texted me and said he didn’t see me online, I told him I start later, and he said “that won’t cut it.” I’m fuming. I produce so much more work than my coworker (for much less pay), I’m on till 5 or after (even if I don’t have to be since I skipped lunch or really nailed my work before 5), and I never say anything about the obviously unfair treatment.
What do I do in this situation? I got up early today again to see if she’s on, and nope. Literally this lady works maybe 2 hours a day and my boss has the audacity to tell me something about starting a bit later when I have nothing important in the morning regardless.

2023.03.28 13:36 Happy_Fig441 How should my sourdough starter smell?
Hey, question is above. My sourdough starters (I have one liquid and stiff starter) seem really healthy, when fed they triple in size in a warm place within 2 hours with many nice big bubbles. But they both smell really fruity, a little beer-like and yeasty, not quite acidic. I made a liquid one for its known acidic properties and a stiff one for more yeasty flavors but both are quite fruity and yeasty. When I started a week ago, my sourdough was really acidic and vinegary with only whole grain rye flour and water and now I feed it with a mix of plain flour, whole wheat flour and whole grain rye flour. Should it smell so fruity?

2023.03.28 13:34 mcfc_4eva How does housing allowance work? Is it taxed?
I’ve been offered a job (Beijing) with a GROSS salary of 30k plus housing allowance of 8k.
I’ve been told the base salary is taxable as per usual but the 8k housing allowance is not taxed (if I provide fapiao or they pay the rent directly). I just want to check this is correct and up to date information.
I asked them to provide an estimate on my NET salary and here’s what they said;
GROSS = 360k Salary + 96k Housing NET = ~316k Salary + 96K Housing
According to online calculators they’ve miscalculated my base salary tax, but also are they even right about the housing allowance?
Additional information: They’re providing high end insurance in lieu of social health insurance who I have agreed to. I have no dependents or other tax exemptions that I’m aware of.
TL;DR: With an annual gross salary of 360k plus housing allowance of 96k, how much should I expect after tax?

2023.03.28 13:34 Middle_Obligation_65 PI-IBS: Goodbye career dreams?
Hey, I'm (M33) in a bit of a catch-22 career-wise.
I've been working as a documentary and TV editor for 7 years. During half of which I've constantly been planning my exit, to get out of the office and the job for these reasons:
- I'm trained as a director, and editing was only a stepping stone out of school, but for a while my personal life went spiraling, and breaking out of the only safe routine didn't seem a viable choice.
- My back is not in great shape. And physio says a desk job is not great for my condition.
- Being an editor in unscripted content is kind of like being a writer. Your brain is constantly problemsolving, feeling, and being creative. You stare at a screen and listen to the same audio 100 times a day. It's an exhausting full-time job for me.
- I like to move my body and get energy from being hands-on.
After I got into therapy for two years, I felt ready for something else, physical and mental shape top notch. I got a directing job before summer, which was later cancelled due to funding, but I felt hopeful about the future. At the end of summer, I came down with food poisoning (shigella, campylobacter, and aremonas cavie)...
And my stomach decided not to return to normal, so I cut my losses and decided to power through like I have done before (I get IBS for about a year every decade for some reason) and took a 6 month editing engagement, with double work hours and high stress. But this time my stomach didn't stop. I had a meltdown after a night out. Stomach worse than before.
Now I'm on sick leave. The doctors said functional IBS and seem reluctant to do any tests other than bloodwork and calprotectin. My sick leave is out in a couple of days. I feel strongly opposed to going back to the desk and editing, but at the same time, my new career plan would mean a lot of unexpected locations, events, work hours, meal times etc.. which is already stressful without stomach issues. When my stomach is like it is, I also develop quite a bit of claustrophobia and social anxiety.
I'm currently trying to write, but it's not really something I can make a living of yet (if ever).
So:

2023.03.28 13:34 Professional_Leg8183 I’m tired of having just enough money to get by.
I’m going to school to try and expand my career options, but I also work full time in order to survive obviously. I make $15/hr, which is what 90% of entry-level jobs in my area pay (Indiana). I make just enough to split rent with a roommate and pay for utilities, food, and gas. I don’t have extra money at all. I pray my clothes don’t get ruined because I simply don’t have enough to buy new ones. I hold my breath every time I start my shitty car, praying it starts and gets me to work or school because if it broke down, I wouldn’t have enough money to fix it. I don’t know what the solution to the wealth inequality problem is, but I know from experience a $15/hr minimum wage won’t solve anything.

2023.03.28 13:33 pollietollie About to hit £3000 in my Barclays help to buy ISA, what next?
Hi there,
So I’m 25 and I’m about to hit £3000 savings next month in my help to buy ISA, that’s held with Barclays. Past that point, I won’t be getting the 25% government bonus when I cash out, so I’m looking for other ways to invest as I don’t want to keep paying into that account.
I make on average about £45,000 per year after bonuses and I’m going to be in a position where I can save a bit more. I’m looking to put away £200-£400 per month. I also add to my pension every month.
I’m happy to look at relatively higher-risk investments as I’m still young, but mostly just looking to park my money somewhere and make some money on compound interest. I don’t need to or want to touch that money.
What would you recommend? I’ve heard a lot of talk about Vanguard?

2023.03.28 13:33 Maleficent_Pear_2192 HR/Firing advice for well poisoner?
I have an employee that needs to be let go, plain and simple. We’ve had multiple issues with this person since 2 months after they started. They’ve now worked for me for over 2 years. At the time I had just lost my father unexpectedly and let a lot of things slide since every time we talked the employee would make amends and say they would modify behavior. I recently got a mentor match from score.org, and per his advice I started keeping an HR folder. Luckily, this day in age, a lot goes documented via email and text so I have direct receipts to put into my folder for this person. I’ve given this person chance after chance but they continue to be insubordinate and act like they own the business and it would suffer without her when in reality, she’s a bad manager. She is definitely a well poisoner as in the last few months most of my employees have complained about her bad attitude or habits and how it affects them. We discussed this in a management meeting and she made excuses the whole time. I run a seasonal business and with spring break here, I really needed the extra staff but she’s left me high and dry once more claiming illness. She does have a doctor’s note for one of the days but the rest are unaccounted for. And while I always believe my employees, this unfortunately isn’t the first time she took an extended leave of absence during a busy time “due to illness” without documentation. It really boils down to the fact that she doesn’t like to work when it’s busy. Another problem is that she is a litigious individual aka she likes to talk about suing everyone. I’m afraid to let her go because she may retaliate via a lawsuit. Although I’ve documented everything and her firing would be performance-related, not discrimination based, my mentor said you can basically sue anyone for anything. Any advice on how to go about this?

2023.03.28 13:32 air_sunshine_trees The word "fat"
I find myself casually using the word "fat" when talking to my husband/other family about diet choices for my toddler. I'm wondering what other parents do when talking to their children. I'm worried that little one will cause offence when he can talk.
For example, we offer whole fruit but avoid fruit juice "because it makes people fat"
It's short, it's concise, but would it be better to say "it contains too much sugar relative to the amount of fibre"
I'm also expecting the question "why don't we have a car?" to come up one day. Is it ok to say "it's important to move our bodies so that we don't get fat"
I don't want kiddo to tease another kid for being overweight, but it is also important to us that he realises that what is currently normal for society isn't healthy.
Little one is only 15months at the moment so we're a way off this being an issue, just curious about what others are doing.
I'm not worried about eating disorder problems. My husband and I have a healthy relationship with food. We enjoy and eat lots of yummy food. We just know enough about how our monkey brains work to make it easier for ourselves to make healthier choices.

2023.03.28 13:32 okitay Advice on using PTO before leaving nursing job?
My nursing job prefers you put in a 4 week notice. I plan to submit my letter of resignation June 1 and my last day of work will be June 29.
I’m pretty sure I’m calculating my PTO correctly between how much I have now, how much I will still be earning, and already approved time off.
At the end of it all I would have just over 60 hours of PTO left which I could take off another 5 days since our shifts are 12 hours.
My question is… is it frowned upon to use up your PTO hours before your last day of work? I want to avoid using my PTO by calling in because that is definitely a crappy thing to do since I’d be leaving the unit short on a moment’s notice. But if I had some shifts off that are already approved they’d be able to plan better to keep the unit well staffed.
Basically I just need to know would they view me as a bad/lazy person for wanting to actually use my remaining PTO hours in the best way I could rather than having them pay out my remaining PTO since I’d only get 90% pay out and it’s taxed very highly anyway?
Any advice helps, thank you in advance!

2023.03.28 13:32 FatalHaberdashery Chrome / CSS, and how to easily enable and disable styles applied to the page when developing.
I recently switched from Firefox nightly to Chrome canary for my web dev testing. One thing I am finding real problems with is enabling and disabling the CSS with ease. Let me explain...
As part of my webdev I check accessibility, and part of that is viewing stuff without the CSS applied. In Firefox this was very easy. Bring up the browser's "OS menu" (ie: press [alt]), then select .. (View) > (Page Style) > (No Style) .. and I'm viewing my work sans stylesheets.
When coming to replicate this with Chrome I've run into a problem. For a start it has no "OS menu", pressing [alt] simply highlights the 3 dotted setting icon at the top right. Within these settings, there seems no option to select with or without CSS.
I have search the Internet for a solution, but it seems to come down to three main ways..
1) Physically deleting the link/style tags from the page. 2) Manually blocking the CSS from the Network tab of the dev tools. 3) Install an extension to do the job.
With (1) and (2), that is amateur hour and simply not efficient development while manually blocking then unblocking every time I want to test is, while effective, stupid and time consuming.
With (3), I'm not going to authorise the use of my data to a 3rd party for such a simple task, if an extension is needed then I'd write it myself but even then it negates the whole point of using either FF's nightly or Chrome's canary, I want a _clean browser_, sans all extensions or any other installs, and as my (normal) Firefox and Chrome have things like ad blockers etc, I do not use them for testing.
Surely (..don't call me Shirley!) there has to be an easy way to toggle styles on and off? If not then Canary is simply not up to the task of development testing.
Thanks in advance for any replies, and just to confirm this isn't a "FF vs Chrome" post, I use both browsers for different things. I just need Canary to realise accessible development is an actual thing and cater for it.
