2023.06.02 11:22 baltimore-aureole I did not know that . . . the $31 Trillion national debt is bigger than the next 4 countries COMBINED !!

Construction can resume with the debt limit increase! Not Shown - The 11 aircraft carriers and supporting battle groups already in service. How does US debt rank compared with the rest of the world? Business and Economy News Al Jazeera.) Wow . . . we are the biggest effing debtors on the planet? (See link above). And we just gave ourselves permission to borrow waaaay more? Almost half the planet's government debt is owed by the USA. We're number one! We're number one! The founding fathers would be so proud. This is one of those factoids even CNN and Fox don't talk about. US government debt of $31.4 trillion is bigger than the next 4 borrowers combined. Another mind-blower – China is in second place ($14 trillion). But I bet they don't have a senate and house and head of state who have to debate these things. They're followed by Japan (another surprise - $10T) , France ($3T - no surprise), and Italy (also $3T). After we start selling more Treasury Bills at 12:01 am on Monday we will have more debt than those 4 runners up . . . PLUS #5 India. There are a bunch of losers I expected to see on this list but didn't show up. Aye carumba - Mexico has less than $1 Billion in national debt! Nobody from Africa on the list – and we're ALWAYS on their case, telling them to clean up their act. Brazil is the only South American nation on the list . . . having borrowed just a pittance. I guess the British empire didn't fall because of debt – they owe less than 10% of what we do. Russia isn't even on it anywhere. No wonder we can't eff up their economy and bring a quick end to their Ukranian war crimes. There's probably going to be a few readers yapping that $31 trillion is no big deal. And that they don't earn enough to pay income taxes anyway so what's the problem? Somebody else – or their kids – will go nuts figuring out what to do about our debt. These readers are of course the same financial illiterates complaining they can't afford to buy a house. The reason so many people can't afford a mortgage is that US government is vacuuming up all the money in the world. Our national debt is more than twice the $15 billion in residential mortgages borrowed by all the people living in the USA. Imagine how much more affordable home interest rates would be if there was 3X as much money to lend. And if the Federal Reserve wasn't jerking rates up and down all the time to make us think our government is solving pandemics, solving poverty, fighting inflation, and the world's most awesome policeman. $31 Trillion in national debt is a major problem. But there's no need for us to memorize that number. The treasury will auction off another $150 Billion in T Bill debt immediately on Monday, as soon as the markets open. By borrowing billions more “our reputation is saved”. Let me be the first to hold my head high, in pride . . . submitted by baltimore-aureole to economy [link] [comments] |

2023.06.02 10:57 DishNo505 booking test against instructors wishes?
i’ve been learning to drive since the end of december and i’ve already brought back my test once, i would say i’m a pretty confident driver i just need to work on my reverse parking as it’s not always 100%. i’ve got my own car and go out in it quite a bit with my parents as well as doing my lessons. my test is currently booked for july but i’ve wanted to get one of those tests within 3 days because i feel like i’ll pass but my instructor is telling me not to go for it, i’ve had other people around me pass after an instructor saying they’re not ready. the pass rate is very high for my area (no long dual carriageway and mostly country lanes.) should i book??

2023.06.02 10:46 Few-Effect-2266 Apartment for my parents
Hi all- I’m enjoying this subreddit quite a bit. I love learning from all of you and seeing different paths from like-minded folks.
My husband and I live in a HCOL area across the country from family and are expecting our first child. The plan was always to move back east, buy a house in a MCOL or LCOL area and be close to family. Unfortunately my husband’s job is not flexible for the next 2-3 years so we’re staying out west a little longer than planned. We currently live in good size 2 bedroom condo (1200 sqft) and are lucky enough to have a large private patio (800 sqft) that can be used year-round.
We both work hybrid schedules: 2 days in the office, 3 days from home. The second bedroom has served us well the last several years as an office/guest room, but now that baby is coming, an office/guest room/nursery just doesn’t seem realistic any longer.
We are on a few waitlists for infant daycare with no realistic chance of getting in, so we have decided to go with a nanny for at least the first year. Given this, we know it’s going to be next to impossible for both of us to WFH effectively with baby and nanny around, let alone have overnight guests.
We are both very close to my parents who live on the east coast and want them to come visit as much as possible. They are entering retirement so they have a lot of time/flexibility and live comfortably, but they are not wealthy by any means. We love sharing experiences with them and want them to be as involved as they can be with their first grandchild. We don’t want them to shell out $$$ for a hotel every time they come, and we also don’t want cost to hinder them from visiting.
Homes in our area (even to rent) are exorbitantly expensive. Even if we rented a 3 bedroom house or townhouse in our area, it would certainly be less than 2,000 sqft (likely close to 1,500) and close to 10k/month in rent. Here’s where my (potentially crazy) scheme comes in. We’re thinking of renting a 2 bedroom apartment for my parents in a nice community that’s a 5 minute drive from our place. It’s in a very family-friendly planned community that’s walkable with shops, restaurants, Whole Foods, movie theater, fitness centers, playgrounds etc. While my parents would use it when they come to visit, my husband and I would also use it as our office space when we WFH 3 days a week. This would give us the flexibility of basically no commutes for the 3 days we don’t go to the office which translates to ~12 hours/week combined. Additionally, since it is so family friendly, it’d be a great place to take our son to the parks/playgrounds etc as he gets older. It would also be great for other family/out of town visitors to use.
The rent is $3,000/month. Even combined with our mortgage/HOA/taxes/insurance payment of $3,300/month, $6,300/month (plus internet/utilities) is significantly cheaper than renting a larger home in our area. I know it’s quite unconventional, but this seems like a good way to give my parents their own space, and a way for us to enjoy the benefits of working remotely while allowing our son and nanny to be comfortable at home. Is this idea totally nuts? Anything I’m not thinking of that we should be considering? Has anyone done something similar? Or if you’re in a similar situation living far from family, how are you handling things? Appreciate any feedback or thoughts!

2023.06.02 10:39 ThrowRA23400 Maybe first panic attack in my (29m) life caused probably because of negativity in my actual relationship.
Hello everyone,
last days I have really high anxiety and last night I think I had a panic attack. The thing is that my girlfriend constantly fill our time with negativity and depressive informations. We are still young (m29/f32) and 6 Months together.
Her problems are all over the place. She hates her boss/job, doesn’t have friends, problems with mother, my friends, her cadriving etc.
Since we are together I get daily E-mails screenshots of her Boss giving her regular tasks for that day. But she is overreacting on any email at work and reflect that on me.
She bought a nice new car recently. But after that she was for 3 Months afraid - what if she scratch it or something. Every day - constantly. Few days ago that happened and somebody damaged her car on a parking lot. She asked me what to do - my go to was: CALL THE POLICE! She didn’t do it, she decided to trust other person that did the damage and went her way to negotiate with her car insurance. Days after that on hourly bases she bothered me with: “WHAT IF…?” questions - even after insurance company already called her and said her that everything is set up and that they will repair her car.
If we put everything on the side I am also constantly listen about her ex. After all this negativity yesterday I said to her that I have a feeling that I’m losing my breath and that I can’t breathe (my heart rate went also through the roof +110bpm to +120bpm acc to Garmin). She said:”Oh yeah, my ex also got panic attacks at some moment - that’s why I left him. It was total mess to deal with that”… She also concluded that I am problem in our relationship because developing panic attacks. (Never had one in my life…and now I am totaly confused). I immediately left her appartment in fear and drove myself home. (I think it was a spontan reaction - I didn’t know what to do, just panicked, sat in my car and went to my place…while having 1000 calls from her and mostly her on the line telling me I am the problem).
About my situation: in the middle of changing jobs (got great offer from Fortune 100 company, but jobs changing is already stressful for me), have tough family situation (as kid kicked out of mothers house and went to fathers place…finished master engineering degree while parallel working and dealing with life/rent/food and having no money)…all that didn’t break me, but now in this relationship I feel broken and without way out.
On the beginning of the relationship I checked myself on all STDs before we had sex, but she refuses till this day to do the tests.
TL;DR; I think that relationship makes me anxious and make me develop panic attacks but I am not sure anymore.

2023.06.02 10:33 teknixelevators20 10 Things to Consider Before Buying a Residential Lifts in Bangalore by Teknix Elevators
Introduction: When it comes to installing an elevator, whether for residential or commercial purposes, several factors must be taken into consideration to ensure a safe and efficient vertical transportation system. In this article, we will discuss ten essential things to consider before buying an elevator, with valuable tips from Teknix Elevators, one of the leading
elevator companies in India, specifically in Bangalore and Hyderabad.
Safety Features: Safety should be the foremost priority when choosing an elevator. Look for
residential lifts in Bangalore that comply with international safety standards and regulations. Ensure that the elevator is equipped with features such as emergency stop buttons, interlocks, safety sensors, and fire-rated doors to protect passengers in the event of an emergency.
Space and Capacity: Evaluate the available space in your building to determine the appropriate size and capacity of the elevator. Consider the number of passengers it needs to accommodate, as well as the size and weight of potential users, including those with disabilities. Teknix Elevators, known for manufacturing the
best home elevators in Bangalore, offers customizable options to suit diverse requirements.
Energy Efficiency: Choose an elevator that is energy-efficient to reduce your carbon footprint and operational costs. Look for elevators equipped with energy-saving technologies such as LED lighting, regenerative drives, and standby mode to conserve energy when not in use.
Maintenance and Service: Consider the availability of maintenance and service support from the elevator company. Opt for companies like
Teknix Elevators, which have a reputation for providing prompt and reliable after-sales service. Regular maintenance is crucial for the smooth operation and longevity of the elevator.
Customization Options: If you have specific design requirements or preferences, look for
elevator manufacturers in Bangalore, like Teknix Elevators, that offer customization options. This allows you to personalize the elevator's aesthetics, cabin finishes, and control panel to match your building's décor and style.
Noise and Vibration: Elevators should operate smoothly and quietly to ensure a comfortable ride for passengers. Consider elevators that incorporate noise and vibration reduction technologies to minimize disturbances, especially in residential buildings.
Compliance with Accessibility Standards: If you require an elevator for a building that needs to be accessible to people with disabilities, ensure that the elevator complies with accessibility standards such as the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) or the National Building Code (NBC) of India. These standards govern features like cabin size, button placement, and handrail height.
Reliability and Durability: Invest in an elevator that is reliable and built to last. Look for reputable
elevator companies in Hyderabad and Bangalore known for their quality and durability. Check customer reviews and testimonials to gain insights into the reliability and longevity of their products.
Future Expansion:
Consider the potential need for future expansion or modernization. Choose an elevator system that allows for easy upgrades and integration of advanced technologies. This future-proofing approach ensures that your elevator can adapt to changing needs and technological advancements.
Budget and Cost: Evaluate your budget and consider the long-term cost implications of owning and maintaining an elevator. While price is a factor, prioritize the overall value and quality of the elevator system rather than solely focusing on upfront costs. A reliable and well-maintained elevator will provide a better return on investment in the long run.
Conclusion: When purchasing an elevator, it is crucial to carefully consider factors such as safety features, space and capacity, energy efficiency, maintenance and service, customization options, noise and vibration reduction, compliance with accessibility standards, reliability and durability, future expansion possibilities, and budget.

2023.06.02 10:19 YamiJanp April/May - Double the months, double the games [20/25]
I somehow forgot to post an update for April and when I realized my mistake, it was already almost the end of May, so I decided to lump the two together. These two months were mostly the months of Pathfinder. I spent whole April and most of the May playing
Kingmaker and brainstorming my character for Wrath of the Righteous. I think my friends, who decided to play alongside me helped that a lot. And we even started talking about trying Pathfinder tabletop game just few hours ago, which I'll DM for. It's nice when videogames have this kind of effect on people. Other than that, I finished
Hero's Hour and while I had fun with it as Heroes clone, it was lacking some depth that would hook me on it. I also played forgotten adventure
A Vampyre Story, which I wish got a sequel. I finally finished
Heidi: The Game. Took me like an hour in total. It was mindless 2D platformer and I still don't regret playing it. Then in May, I opened
Itch.io and a small game called
Fridge Floppers caught my attention. It was fun in-and-out action to complete during my break. I also finally got around to play
Frog Detective 3 and it was magnificent ending to the whole trilogy. I played
Five Dates, which is well-made interactive movie about dating in the time of corona. And I also played the
Mafia: Definitive Edition, a remake of my childhood game. At the end of the month, I started playing Total War: Three Kingdoms. Last Total War game I played was Napoleon, so it has been a while. It's fun so far. On Switch, I made some progress in Xenoblade Chronicles 3, but I'm close to just dropping it. I'm not feeling it. On the other hand, I bought Fire Emblem: Engage and I'm having fun with it so far. I also played LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, which is really boring and doesn't live up to the original LEGO games. I'm currently at Episode VIII, so I think I'll just quickly get past the story mode and end it there. So, let's talk about these games. This will be long update. And as always, beware of spoilers...
Hero's Hour Well, this journey finally ended. I had to make it my secondary go-for game to break a gameplay stereotype a little bit, but I think I'm finally done with it.
I appreciate what the devs decided to do. A Heroes clone that combines stuff from 3rd and 4th entry sounds crazy, but it works. I felt like at home right from the start. The inspiration is sometimes way too obvious, for example there are structures with 1:1 design taken straight from Heroes. I don't mind it that much, I took it as a nod to the legendary series. I would say the inspiration helped me get "in" the game and understand some of the deeper mechanics faster.
The fractions in this game are a combination of Heroes 3 and 4 fractions mixed with something new. Each fraction had its own gimmick that made it unique. For example undead fraction could rise dead enemies, the barbarians could only level up their units by combat, sea fraction could dig up pearls and trade them for more units, lovecraftian fraction had powerful heroes, who could be on multiple places at once, but had to sacrifice some cultists to be able to recruit stronger units and so on... I've played about a half of maps with random fraction to try them all, but later rotated between 3-4 fractions based on my current mood. I think my favourites were undeads and seafolks.
Each fractions had multiple heroes, each one with unique skill tree. But some skills were shared by multiple characters. And with it comes one of my biggest gripes with the game. These skill trees are so unbalanced. There is OP skill that let's you fill a bar after each battle and when you fill it up, it will spawn a Red Dragon on your team. Red Dragon is one of the strongest units in the game. And that is not all. When level up, this skill also let's you upgrade Red Dragons into Black Dragons, who are even more broken than their Heroes 4 counterpart. And some characters can get this skill as early as level 2. Meaning that you can get extreme push in power within first few turns of the game and can completely steamroll your opponents. But it's not the only skill that is unbalanced. While heroes take active part in the battle, their damage is minimal and there are barely any skills that would make them better. Meaning that heroes' main purpose is to cast spells. And the problem is that some heroes only get spell skills at the top of their skill tree. While there are some good pasive skills, the ability to completely wreck your enemies with spells is just better. I mean there are spells that will basically take your opponent's units and make them yours. And once again, some characters can get these spells super early in the game or even start with them.
Which slowly brings me to battles. I had love-hate relationship with them throughout the whole game. Your units move and attack on their own and your only interaction with the battlefield are your heroes' spells. Well, you can also tell your units to retreat or move somewhere else, but it usually had no effect on the battle. So your only way to affect the battle stands on the ability of your hero to cast spells. And having enough mana to do so. As I said, some spells were crazy. There were multiple times, when I got in the battle with just my hero and small army of troops against huge army. And I won just because my hero could cast overpowered spells the whole time. Be it summoning spells or spells that make some of your opponent's unit instantly disappear or change the team or just good old meteorite rain. On the other hand, when my hero had no spells or couldn't cast them, I had to sit through multiple minutes of automatic battle, which got boring pretty fast, because each unit has one animation for movement and one for attack. Because the battlemaps were flat with nothing interesting on them, I also could strategize in any meaningful way. And it was the worst during battles I knew I'll win, just based on power and numbers of my units, but still had to sit through them. Also in most games, there was usually one huge clash with each opponent, after which my opponent could never get enough momentum again to be any threat.
Final point I would to gather my thoughts on are maps themselves. There is no campaign, only few skirmishes. Well, there are over 40 of them. Each map is randomly generated, but you always see the general skeleton the map will follow. It will show you if you and your enemies are connected by land or sea and if there are any neutral towns. But while each map was randomly generated, most of them felt the same. All of them was divided into same areas. Your starting area, where you could get the starting resources. This area was locked away from the neutral area and your opponents by either a guarded tunnel or guarded fortress. This made most of the maps look the same. I was also missing some better motivation than just "beat all of your enemies." I think a campaign would be fun.
Overall, it was unbalanced fun. It was nice watching my army completely wrecks my opponent. But I wish there was more to it. It felt a little bit shallow.
6.5/10.
A Vampyre Story It's crazy and a little bit eerie, how many games, good games, get forgotten so quickly. Especially today, when we get hundreds upon hundreds of games daily. It's sad that there isn't enough time to play every interesting title. Or that some cool series never really sees an ending. It wouldn't happen to games I play, right? There is no way. I'm denying any possibility that this could happen to me.
Which is exactly what happened to A Vampyre Story. This P&C adventure game was planned as a whole trilogy. And they really wanted to make you want it. So you can imagine my surprise, when the game just suddenly ended with a cliffhanger. And when I wanted to get the closure the game owned me, I found out the sequel never came out. There is a prequel, but I want to know what happened to Mona! I need to know! It's my right to know! That makes me angry!
I just spent 4 hours getting to know all the characters. I wish I could do anything to experience at least a bit of what happens next. There is even a trailer for a sequel still available on YouTube. Maybe we could bargain a deal?
Is there even a point in playing games anymore? If all we get is uncertainty after enjoying a good game, isn't it depressing that there will never be a sequel?
Bur it's all gone, isn't it? I'll never meet A Vampyre Story's characters again. They will forever be locked in a cycle of escaping that cursed castle again and again. They will always end up on their way to a crazy scientist. Poor Mona. It's depressing.
But you know what? I had fun with it. I loved its art style and humour. I enjoyed exploring the castle and the town and solving the puzzles. I liked that you could use your bat companion as an item, which meant you could combine him with other items. In the end, nothing can take my enjoyment back. So, I think the only thing to do is to accept that this was one-off experience and move on.
Overall, I hope you enjoyed my [s]stages of grief[/s] review of A Vampyre Story.
8/10.
Heidi: The Game It's strange. I got this game alongside my Game Boy Micro and bunch of other (and arguably better) games, but this one stayed in my mind and from time to time, I noticed I'm thinking about it. So it's only natural for me to pick it up again and play it.
It's a game based on a children book. I remember I read the book in primary school during classes. And I was lucky to be familiar with the story, because the game barely tell you anything about it. It don't even bother to be consistent. For example Heidi mentions Klara once out of nowhere at the end of the game, while completely ignoring her existence up until that point. Other characters are pretty much non-existing, only one of them has dialogue and that's only at the start of the game.
The gameplay is simple. It's 2D platformer, where you go from left to right. And about 70 % of the levels really felt like I was just holding a forward button and just beat the level by jumping at the right time to avoid pits and enemies. The rest had me sometimes going up or down and very rarely (in like 2 levels), I actually had to navigate through a complex layout. It's a game for small kids, I get it, but some levels could be finished in under a minute with minimal input.
Overall, for a game that lasted me for about an hour, it was fun and quick, but didn't really leave an impression. It would be cool flash game. Nothing more, nothing less.
6/10.
Pathfinder: Kingmaker "It takes 500 hours to complete, " that was an ad for a game I was a little bit interested in. Up until that moment. After I read this ad, I moved the game to the "probably will never play" category. "An epic adventure that will take you 100s of hours to finish, " says another ad for another game. But it fails to address that that game has enough content for about 20 hours and the rest is just a boring filler.
One view, when it comes to value of games is how long it is. And it's honestly something I can't really understand. Time spent in the game is weird variable to measure the value of the game with. For example, when I finally decided to play The Witcher 3 (as someone, who played previous entries on launch, I was turned down by the switch to more traditional open-world and the promise of 100s of hours of content), I spent over 100 hours in it on one playthrougth. But, and also because of this, I think it's mediocre game with great dialogues and cinematography. I experienced everything the game has to offer in about 20 hours. But the game never built up on that, so the final 80 hours of my gameplay were really bland and boring and felt like a filler for most parts. I really only kept up playing because the general consensus about it is that it's one of the best RPG of all time and I just didn't get to the good parts yet. Which is a lot weirder, since it isn't really a RPG, but that's probably a topic for another time. On the other hand, Smile For Me is a game I've finished in one sitting one evening. It knew exactly what it wants to do, executed it perfectly and ended right when it was suppose to. And it's a game I still fondly remember to this day. The art of ending the game at the right time is really hard to master and it doesn't always apply that longer games don't know when to end. For example, Divinity: Original Sin 2, that I've played last month is long game. But it's exactly as long as it needs to be. It barely has any filler in it and leaves me wanting more. On the other side, SUPERHOT is about 2 hours long, but even that is way too much and feels like a slog and just doesn't know when to end.
Which slowly gets me to Pathfinder: Kingmaker. Kingmaker puts you in a shoes of a (future) monarch. As you progress the game, you gain the ability to manage your kingdom. And with it comes the biggest problem. The game has awful pacing. It starts good. Kill a bandit king and claim good lands. You have few days to do it. But then, you quickly get another, more personal quest. And suddenly, you have to choose. Which one will your pursue first. Will you take out your competitor and risk that the only trail you have to the bandit king will go cold? It adds so much to the game and you question whatever you've done the right thing.
But as the game goes on and you get your kingdom, these choices slowly disappear and all you're left with is "you have X days to finish this quest," which the game sometimes doesn't even tell you and then will just say you failed the objective after some time. While this adds to the overall feeling of alive world, it also introduces few more problems.
But let's talk about the kingdom management for now. You get special quests that can be resolved by you or your advisors and take some time. You basically just click, who will solve which quest and then wait. Some of the quests will lock-in your character for few in-game days. Which means if you don't finish all your personal quests first, you risk failing them. It's really a weird design choice, especially since you still can use you companions normally, while they are solving a kingdom quest, just not your main character.
Then, there is the pacing issue. When you finish a chapter, you have some time to manage your kingdom and explore. Exploring is, like in many exploring-focused games, useful only at the start. After that, you'll encounter the same looking maps, same enemies and same loot. The loot was so weirdly distributed that I've used some weapons all the way from the first dungeon to the end of the game, because there just weren't better weapons of that kind for my characters. After a while, I didn't even bother with exploring everything, because what I got during the main game was enough. So, that's one part of the game that I don't really want to participate in during this time. The second is kingdom management. As I said before, there isn't really much substance to it too. You just click and wait. Sometimes, you don't have anything to click on. So you'll have to click "Skip a day" button. Yeah, there is a button that will skip one in-game day. That's just an atrocious idea. Instead of giving you any meaningful activities to spend your time in, the game let's you click one button until it allows you to continue. And it really is an issue. In one instance, I had to skip over 400 days until the game let me continue with the main story. For the final two chapters, I had to turn kingdom management on auto, because I would have to spend another in-game year clicking skipping button.
It's really a shame, because I think the story was fun. Not something world breaking, but nice little tabletop adventure. Same goes for characters, which I enjoyed quite a lot. I even managed to swap my party members a lot, not really having a set team of 6. I was afraid some of them will be annoying, like overly optimistic Linzi or her polar opposite Jaethal. But even them managed to convince me to like them. My favourites are Harrim, Valerie and Nok-Nok. Harrim had nice twist on the typical dwarf character, Nok-Nok was fun comedic relief and Valerie was one of the best Lawful Neutral character I've ever seen. The final dungeon forced me to shuffle the party one more time, so there was no time for stereotype to settle in. I've played as Wizard, an illusionist, and it worked fairly well. Illusionists are usually RP-heavy characters and doesn't work well in these linear environments, but I had fun with it. Especially illusions on higher levels were something I never tried before.
Which brings me to the pacing issue #2. The battle system. I hate the real-time-with-pause system of cRPGs. Who's idea was it? Who likes to watch two parties missing each other for 10 minutes, while they as player has 0 input in the game? It's not how battles in tabletop RPGs work. Luckily, I was able to switch to turn-based system and it was a little bit better, but I still encountered moment, where no hit would land for 10+ rounds. And especially by the end of the game, it was tiresome to fight low-level enemies in this mode, so I kept switching in and out of it. I'm the end, it was the best idea. I let the game solve easy fights for me, while I kept the harder fights and bossfights for myself. And it was great. I enjoyed most of the chapters and their respective bosses. The final bosses were a little bit predictable, but I don't think the game was aiming at some big shocking revelation, when it comes to them.
Overall, this game has a lot of good ideas and mechanics. But it will shove them down your throat to the point that you'll actively avoid them. When I turned down/ignored all side activities, I had a lot of fun with the game. Which is weird, but it's the result of your 25 hours long game taking 70 hours to finish.
8/10.
Fridge Floppers Fridge Floppers is a 15 minutes physics-based game made in 48 hours. Which is impressive. The main goal is to move a fridge to a van, while controlling two movers carrying it. You can move them both at the same time or let one of them jump. But the fridge can't fall off.
There were about 5 levels of varying difficulty, just scratching the edge of all the possibilities. You barely get to experience the pain of climbing up and down a set of stairs before the game ends.
And there isn't really anything else to say. The art style is simple, yet nice and feels like a good fit for this game. The controls are easy to understand and hard(-ish) to master.
Overall, I wish there were more levels added to the game, because as I already said, I love the concept.
8/10.
Frog Detective 3 You might remember me excitingly talking about the previous two entries in this series. Ever since then, I was eagerly waiting for the final part of the trilogy. Only to completely miss the release. I only recently learned about it, while browsing
Itch.io. I have no idea how could I miss it, but made sure to play it as soon as possible.
Frog Detective is the worthy finale of the series. It picks up exactly where the previous entry ended, but you're also served quick recap of previous games. The game plays exactly like the previous two games. You're let loose in a small area and have to solve a crime. This time, you're in Wild West-themed town and you're trying to find everyone's stolen hats. You're aided by Lobster Cop, who is supposedly #1 detective in this world. But is he really? The story is extremely silly and full of plot twists and surprises. I would never expect this game to surprise with its story.
The gameplay is simple and follows the same structure as the previous games. You talk with characters, find out what they need and what can they offer and then you start exchanging items with them until you get what you need. It's always clear what to do and especially after you talk with all characters, you're just following a linear path.
Overall, this is great way to end the series. I'll be looking forward next game from these devs.
9/10.
Mafia: Definitive Edition While I've played the original Mafia (and its sequel) when I was younger, I never really joined in the cult that worship this game and its creator as second coming of christ. It was a great game, but the fanbase and its creator are a little bit crazy. And I think that's what turned me off the series for so long. I think the last time I've played Mafia was 10 years ago and it took me so long to get to this remake. Now, while I'm writing this, I know I had some kind of point to make in this paragraph, but I forgot what it was...
So, let's move on to the actual remake. I think it does a lot of things right. I like the re-imagining of the cutscenes, the added details and dialogues. The city looks amazing. It looks like it did in my imagination back in 2002. But it also introduced some not so great changes. It completely kills "Just for Relaxation" mission. It was one of the best mission in the original game, which let you tackle the problem your own way. It also made sense from narrative perspective and was grounded in reality like the rest of the game. Now, it's stupid boring forced linear stealth mission, that betrays Salieri's character and just makes everyone so unlikable and makes them act out of character. Plus, for some reason, there is still dialogue from the original that doesn't make sense in this new scenario. Luckily it's almost final mission of the game and it has no consequences on the rest of the missions.
The gameplay is pretty much the same as the original, only tweaked a little bit to match the modern standard. I like it. The original had more opened areas and let you handle missions your own way, but I didn't mind the more linear approach. It was annoying few times, because I was so used to completing certain mission certain way, but nothing to be mad about. Unlike the mission I talked above.
Overall, I think this remake is nice alternative to the original, but scratches completely different itches, so I don't think it's something to replace the original.
7.5/10.
Five Dates Five Dates is interactive movie about dating during the time of corona.
And to be honest, there isn't really much to talk about. The gameplay is simple. You watch a movie and sometimes pick, where to take the story. There are 5 woman to date and each of them has really captivating personality and story. They didn't feel one-dimensional at all. I didn't expect it, but the game had great writing and was full of surprises. I decided to first tackle Saffron's storyline and when the credits started to roll, I was left with my mouth opened. I had to take few minutes to really grasp what just happened in the last few minutes. It was fun and it left me wanting more, so I returned and finish all storylines. The acting was enjoyable and I'll make sure to check more games from this studio. I've actually played their Late Shift back in 2017 and it's amazing how much they improved since then. I think it was from them.
And... that's pretty much it. It was cool short game, the acting was great, the dialogues, the characters and writing was fun, there was really big attention to details, despite each shot being just a character standing/sitting in front of webcam.
8/10.
For June, I'm playing
Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous. I couldn't get enough of Kingmaker, despite it sometimes feeling really dragged out. But I know what settings to turn off or on to make the game more fun. The full version of
HROT, Czech Boomer Shooter, was released, so I hope to get around to play it. And I hope to finish
Total War: Three Kingdoms. And maybe make some progress with my Switch games. And I'll also try to put
Call of the Sea somewhere in between them.

2023.06.02 08:45 NGLRedditIsDumb Okay, national trend seems like Amazon is putting the vices on flexers.
Reading messages, it sounds like base rates are the going standard and that there has been a lot of onboarding of new drivers across all markets. That usual refresh refresh refresh that would get you a $18+ surge per block has been taken off the board.
I feel like this is a psychological trick, though, because I went to the warehouse and it was full of carts today. I mean full. All lined up and ready to go with a parking lot only half full. I didn't bother playing the refresh refresh refresh game the past two days, because I didn't want to play the hustle. Too much time for too little reward. Plus, I am attempting an experiment on my reserved blocks to see if the AI is filtering blocks closer to my residence and will need a decent sample size.
However, I will return to the refresh refresh refresh game soon. Maybe tomorrow just to see if they have shot themselves in the foot by losing the interest of all of their vet drivers and now they are dealing with a bunch of noob drivers returning 20+ packages a day.
Our only ability to organize is really sharing information. Let's keep each other informed.

2023.06.02 07:59 Miglanigroup88 Where to get the best ready-to-move flats in Noida extension?
Do not we all have to leave our house to achieve a specific aim or start a new chapter at a particular time in our life? Going to another city that is a stranger to us makes us crave more to feel the warmth of our home. You only need
ready-to-move flats in Noida extension to feel the warmth of your home..
Many people tend to go for rent a house, but in the back of our minds, we all have the fear that at any time, we may lose the roof under which we are staying. To get away from this, we tend to buy a house we make our home by decorating it and making memories there.
So to help people achieve this, Miglani Groups have been working day and night by creating and designing such architectural projects, which are a great treat for our eyes, heart, and even our pocket.
Their fantastic project, the
Bally Ha’I, comprises
ready-to-move flats in Noida extension and is here for your rescue.
Who are the Miglani group?
They are a massive company with a notable and significant history in the investment and development field. You can see their end-to-end cut-off designed project around the Delhi NCR area.
But they have been focusing on Greater Noida, where they want to serve their customers with their well-furnished flats project of 2bhk and 3bhk.
And for Miglani Group, present you Bally Ha’i.
What is Bally Ha’i?
This is one of the best closes to the finished project of Miglani Group, which can surpass their customers’ expected level of design and aspiration.
In this project, every fragment from the architectural floor plan to even the interior design and the material used promises their customer to give a proper authentic look.
This project has been made to keep its charm by keeping it well structured to support the technology for solar and wind energy and even with great green eco around the project.

A quite harsh (EN/GER) PvE/RP server, active Admin, is welcoming all PvE/RP players who want to explore the large Prison Island of Scum at their own pace.
The start can be harsh since there are a lot more puppets roaming around in Towns and Bunkers
Name: ENDZONE (GEEN -- PvE/RP)
IP: 176.57.171.142:28402
Location: EU West
Metabolism: Is lowered just a bit, eating twice a day is now enough.
Mech Damage: Is set to 1.2
Puppets: x9 exterior, x5 inside, x3 Wild, spawn chance for all is 70%. Puppet Respawn-Timer in Bunkers and Towns is raised to 30 minutes, so once you have cleared out the hordes of Puppets, you get at least enough time to loot what you can before they are back.
Suicide Puppets: Active
Puppet Damage: 2.8
Loot rate: for stuff found in the world 1.2 and for containers 1.8
RP: more than welcome, but in no way a requirement or must-do to play on this server.
NPC Trader: Are active, but a lot of items, like military equipment and almost all guns, scopes and large backpacks, are removed to encourage looting POIs and make that AK you find in some crate feel a lot more special. Magazines and basic Ammo types for any weapon are for sale at the Armory for a higher, price.
Building mode: Unrestricted, few rules in place like not building in Areas that are patrolled by Mechs, don't block Bridges or main roads.
Cargo Drops: Active, 30-45 minutes in-between
Vehicles: A few Cars are scattered all over the Map, the same goes for dirt bikes and bicycles, more can be bought at the Traders or maybe bartered for with other players if anyone has a spare
(Engine install works on the server) Nighttime: Will start at 22:00 and Sunrise is at 04:00 (max darkness)
Restart times: 06:00 CEST and 18:00 CEST
Discord: https://discord.gg/SuGKYwEScS -No Bot-shop no P2W, the server is Bot-free -The start can be challenging if you just run into a town without any preparations because of the high number of Puppets, but the current settings keep it interesting even if you are fully geared out, there is always a risk of losing everything, crafting a bow is the best way to start off. So if you are having problems just ask in chat, someone can give you a ride to a safer location or a Trader. --Some additional Info:-- Trade Routes: Salt: 1Kg Salt pack can be sold for a better profit at the C2 Trader and looted in bigger numbers at the Salt Ponds down in the Z2 Sector

2023.06.02 07:37 pirateslifewalee What is the going rate for a full time dog nanny?
I saw an ad on Facebook for one and I thought it was so crazy but now I’m thinking they were on to something.
We have a 1.5 yr old Rottweiler. He’s stubborn and VERY rambunctious. Without going in to a ton of detail; dog parks and dog daycare are a no go for him. That said; he needs a ton of mental and physical exercise in addition to tons of attention.
We also have 2 cats. 4 litter boxes, a Catio, stroller for them. Between the 3 of them, someone is always at the vet or out of food or out of litter or needs flea treatment. Never ends!
I think it would be super helpful to have someone come in and help with all of that.
Duties include:
Clean litter boxes once a week(4 litter boxes)
Scoop boxes daily
Clean and refill all water bowls daily(3 dog bowls, 3 cat bowls)
*Let cats on catio for 2-3 hours or take for a walk in stroller (daily)
Take pets to all vet appointments as needed
Administer all medicine and topical treatments as needed
Restock food, litter, treats, toys, gear, etc as needed
Make sure old/hazardous toys are thrown away as needed
Monday take dog on 2 walks + play session in nearby field
Tues take dog on play date with 1 vetted dog and their owner + 1 walk if needed
Wed take dog to a sniff spot, farm, or creek(we have a list of private spots we have access to) + 1 walk if needed
Thurs same as one of the above
Fri off work
Bathe dog (monthly or as needed)
Clip all animals nails as needed
Play with cats (daily)
Prep enrichment activities
No feeding necessary
What would the going rate for this be? How many hours a day would need to be allotted? Anything I should remove or clarify?
*oh and for the catio, we wouldn’t need someone sitting out there for 2-3 hours. Just open the door and let them go. Check in to make sure they’re doing ok, make sure the outside door is securely locked. The person could even leave the catio door open while they walk the dog around the neighborhood as long as all of the exterior house doors are locked. Catio time and a stroller ride for them isn’t mandatory daily but they sure would appreciate it!
Just trying to see what our options are!

He followed the birds obsessively, observing them in the air and on the ground, in pursuit of their prey, making a kill, eating, and at rest, activities he describes with an extraordinary fusion of precision and poetry. And as he continued his mysterious private quest, his sense of human self slowly dissolved, to be replaced with the alien and implacable consciousness of a hawk. It is this extraordinary metamorphosis, magical and terrifying, that these beautifully written pages record. Date of Publication: 2012
Country of Origin: America
Pagecount: 352 in TPB ; 333 in HC
Goodreads Rating: 4.07 average from 410,719 readers
Genre Tags: Nonfiction, Psychology, Self Help
Synopsis: At least one-third of the people we know are introverts. They are the ones who prefer listening to speaking; who innovate and create but dislike self-promotion; who favor working on their own over working in teams. It is to introverts—Rosa Parks, Chopin, Dr. Seuss, Steve Wozniak—that we owe many of the great contributions to society. In Quiet, Susan Cain argues that we dramatically undervalue introverts and shows how much we lose in doing so. She charts the rise of the Extrovert Ideal throughout the twentieth century and explores how deeply it has come to permeate our culture. She also introduces us to successful introverts—from a witty, high-octane public speaker who recharges in solitude after his talks, to a record-breaking salesman who quietly taps into the power of questions. Passionately argued, superbly researched, and filled with indelible stories of real people, Quiet has the power to permanently change how we see introverts and, equally important, how they see themselves. Come home when you can.” He returns to discover a place both wholly familiar and barely recognizable and is cast into the center of an interracial land dispute with the exigencies of war. Title: The Lost City of the Monkey God Author: Douglas Preston
Date of Publication: 2017
Country of Origin: America
Pagecount: 326 in TPB; 328 in HC
Goodreads Rating: 3.92 average from 52,856 readers
Genre Tags: Nonfiction, Adventure, Travel
Synopsis: A five-hundred-year-old legend. An ancient curse. A stunning medical mystery. And a pioneering journey into the unknown heart of the world's densest jungle. Since the days of conquistador Hernán Cortés, rumors have circulated about a lost city of immense wealth hidden somewhere in the Honduran interior, called the White City or the Lost City of the Monkey God. Indigenous tribes speak of ancestors who fled there to escape the Spanish invaders, and they warn that anyone who enters this sacred city will fall ill and die. In 1940, swashbuckling journalist Theodore Morde returned from the rainforest with hundreds of artifacts and an electrifying story of having found the Lost City of the Monkey God-but then committed suicide without revealing its location. Three quarters of a century later, author Doug Preston joined a team of scientists on a groundbreaking new quest. In 2012 he climbed aboard a rickety, single-engine plane carrying the machine that would change everything: lidar, a highly advanced, classified technology that could map the terrain under the densest rainforest canopy. In an unexplored valley ringed by steep mountains, that flight revealed the unmistakable image of a sprawling metropolis, tantalizing evidence of not just an undiscovered city but an enigmatic, lost civilization. Venturing into this raw, treacherous, but breathtakingly beautiful wilderness to confirm the discovery, Preston and the team battled torrential rains, quickmud, disease-carrying insects, jaguars, and deadly snakes. But it wasn't until they returned that tragedy struck: Preston and others found they had contracted in the ruins a horrifying, sometimes lethal-and incurable-disease. 2023.06.02 07:24 garthywoof Order Delivered By Someone Else
Hello shoppers, interesting question for you guys.
Last week, I ordered a small grocery batch. Mostly just some extra cooking ingredients and a single bottle of alcohol for the weekend. There were no issues with the items in the order, or the time of delivery. I usually tip around 15%, higher percentage if it's a small order, since gas is the same for the drive, so I never have an issue getting things sooner than the approximate, on demand window.
This time however, my order was assigned to a man, call him, I don't know, Zach. Zach's picture showed he was a middle aged, bald dude. (Name changed for privacy.)
My order was delivered by someone who was clearly a woman, long hair in an updo, and clearly not 'Zach.'
Now I worked in the gig economy for years, for Uber, Lyft, even an old food delivery service that's since been shutdown. I know it's tough, people are flakey, unnecessarily demanding, poor at communicating directions, and can be tip-baiters. So I always leave everyone stellar reviews to help them out in the system.
But... is this something I should not have rated highly and should have reported? I could clearly see into the car, as it was parked right in front of the front door. There was no one in there but this woman. It wasn't the shopper that my order was assigned to.
Thanks for any help!

2023.06.02 07:20 Liath-Luachra [Discussion] Ducks – ONE MONTH LATER through end
Hello lovely readers,
Welcome to the second and final discussion of
Ducks: Two Years in the Oil Sands by Kate Beaton. This autobiographical comic was
Canada Reads (an annual "battle of the books") winner for 2023. You can read the first discussion
here.
Summary The story picks up one month after that horrible party. Kate sleeps with Mike. She continues to get weird sexual comments from the men she works with, but she has started to laugh the comments off. Many of the men seem to have problems with her giving them orders, and her superiors get pissy with her for minor things or for wanting ‘special treatment’. Joe, a fellow Nova Scotian, overhears her swearing in frustration and tells her that everyone at the mine is just yelling at the guy next to them for work they’re not doing themselves, but that people tend to be friendlier to people from their own region of Canada. Kate wonders aloud to Doug whether the oil sands make people better or worse.
The men at the mine have heard that Kate’s ‘little friends’ (her sister Becky and friend Lindsay) are going to be joining them, and she warns them to leave them alone. When Becky and Lindsay arrive, they are wearing skirts and they quickly notice the staring and weird behaviour from the men on site. Kate apologises for it, and they wonder why she is saying sorry.
Kate tells Becky and Lindsay that the other men have been leaving her alone since most people know about her and Mike, and they tell her it’s because in their eyes she’s ‘claimed’.
They take a trip to
Gregoire Beach, but Kate doesn’t wear a swimsuit or go swimming. Becky asks her what’s up with her, as she’s noticed something is wrong. Kate talks about how everything at the beach seems so normal, but that she isn’t. However, she doesn’t explain further.
Kate looks for other jobs online, and sees a post for a job at the
Maritime Museum of British Columbia in Victoria, the capital of British Columbia.
Not long afterwards, she sees the man who forced himself on her at that party. He and the group of men he’s with see her and they start laughing.
Kate hears a man playing
Peter’s Dream on his guitar, and joins in singing the song.
She goes to Becky’s room and tells her that she needs to leave the oil sands for a while, even though she and Lindsay have just arrived. She asks her to promise that she and Lindsay will look out for each other, and finally tells her about the assaults. Becky tells her that it wasn’t her fault, and wishes she had been there sooner to protect her as that’s her job as the big sister. She tells Kate that it happened to her too, at her university dorm. She tells Kate she should go.
We leave the oil sands, for a year in Victoria. Kate gets the museum job but it’s no more than 21 hours per week, so she gets a second job. In a coffee shop, she hears the song
An Innis Aigh playing, and tells a woman who was wondering aloud about the language that it’s
Gaelic.
Victoria seems like a nicer place than the oil sands, but it isn’t perfect – the city big problems with homelessness and mental health, but none of the old, rich people living there care [read runner note – according to Victoria’s
Wikipedia page, the city is known for its disproportionately large retiree population. Some 23.4% of the population of Victoria and its surrounding area are over 65 years of age, which is higher than the overall Canadian distribution of over 65 year-olds in the population (19%). A historically popular cliché refers to Victoria as the home of "the newly wed and nearly dead"]. Kate is fired from her job for not taking American money and not wanting to sell the merchandise badly enough. One of her colleagues (I think?) sees her drawing a comic, and suggests that she should
make a website.
Kate tells her parents that on her days off she works at a grocery store, and her father wonders what her degree was for. Shortly afterwards, she is fired from the grocery store for yawning and ‘being surly’. She goes on a date, but panics when the guy tries to kiss her at the end.
Kate can’t get a reprieve from her student loan payments, even though she paid half of it off the previous year with her oil sands earnings. She decides to go back to the oil sands to pay the rest off, and says goodbye to the museum.
After that brief reprieve, we’re back in the oil sands, this time at Shell Albian Sands. Kate has taken a job in the warehouse office, and her living quarters are a bit fancier than at the previous sites. The site also has a
Tim Hortons, Wi-Fi and a gym, even yoga classes. Lindsay tells her that a lot of the warehouse crew from Long Lake have moved up there too. One of her new colleagues is Hatim, who is creepy in a new way, plaguing her with messages despite having a wife and children.
The team get a congratulations message with a gif for achieving three million man hours without a lost time incident (LTI). Kate’s boss, Ryan, tells her that they don’t have LTIs at the site because they look bad for the company, I guess implying that they cover them up.
She sees Doug again, who seems to feel that she’s all high and mighty now with her office job, and struggles with her ‘bossing him’ since she’s younger than him (and presumably because she’s female). When she has to cover a warehouse shift, Doug laughs about how she’s down from on high and has gone soft. He tells her that he sang with
The Men of the Deeps and even sang for the queen, which she doubts because he has a terrible voice. She sings a bit of
Coal Town Road (which I’m kind of disappointed doesn’t sound like Old Town Road) and asks if she could be in the choir too, but he seems annoyed about her singing a mining song when she’s not a miner.
Kate’s sister Becky is still working at Long Lake, but lives in Fort McMurray, and Kate goes to meet her there; she says it’s much better than living in the camp. She tells Kate, that one time a guy jumped out of the closet in her room, but she was able to kick him out. She always locked her door, but often heard the handle jiggling at night. She even had a stalker, who managed to get into her room with a bottle of alcohol and suggested doing body shots – she didn’t report it, but when he got fired everyone thought she had.
Kate struggles to read some of the order sheets because many of the workers are bad spellers or have unclear handwriting; many of the older men at the mine left school in grade six. Lindsay tells her about one of the lead hands from Newfoundland, who can’t read, and was humiliated by the other workers when they tried to make him read the safety memo aloud so they could laugh at him. Lindsay says she’s never seen a grown man ashamed like that, and they discuss how he’s one of the nicest guys there.
A group from the Calgary office visits the mine site, and Kate has to find the nice hard hats and safety vests for the visitors, the ones the actual workers can’t have because they’re too fancy. Basically, they have to put on a show for the head office people – everyone has to look sharp, make things tidier than normal etc. One of the visitors takes a photo of Kate. After they leave, Damian asks if he can have one of the fancy new vests, but they were taken back to Calgary even though they don’t need them at head office.
Kate continues doing her comics, and her colleagues occasionally read them. Ryan finds some of them in the scanner, which she had used to upload them to her website, and tells her not to leave her stuff lying around at work.
Becky and Kate discuss what it would have been like if their father had gone out to the oil sands to work when they were children, as many people did. They wonder if he would have been like the other men they work with, and how they must all be normal at home. Kate says she tries to remember that there are a lot of men who don’t bother her, but she doesn’t remember them because they’re not the ones in her face.
Their safety lectures tell them basic information about how ice is slippery and is all over the ground, which presumably every Canadian already knows. One of the men remarks that it’s not about safety, but an arse-covering exercise so that a worker can’t sue them if they fall. Kate doodles
a pony in her notebook (thank you
u/Amanda39 for linking to this comic in last week’s discussion!).
Many of the staff have families that they don’t see very often. One of the men gets a phonecall from his wife’s phone, which he answers thinking it’s an emergency as she never calls during the day; it turns out to be his young son, who is calling to see when he’s coming home next.
Brian asks Kate if she heard about the ducks (TITLE DROP!!); three hundred of them got
stuck in a tailings pond at another oil sands site [read runner note – two years later, Syncrude was actually found guilty of the death of
1,600 ducks]. The site begins installing anti-waterfowl devices, and the staff are reminded that they have to wear PPE at all times. They’re also told about the death Gerald Snopes, another worker; some of the men talking amongst themselves, and Ryan tells them to have some respect. He had a heart attack while operating a crane, and threw himself out of the cab so that he wouldn’t land on the controls and cause an accident.
Kate hears about a road accident involving some men from Cape Breton. She asks Davy about it to see if she knows them, but neither of them do. Kate finds the news articles and feels annoyed that they were misidentified as Calgary men.
Kate notices some welts on her back; Lindsay has them too but doesn’t know what it is. Kate mentions all the dust they have to wipe off everything, and how there’s so much crap in the air. Lindsay wonders what kind of cancer they’ll have in 20 years.
Kate finds Doug building a scarecrow for the tailings pond, which is meant to scare off the ducks. Probably another arse-covering exercise.
Activists from Greenpeace try to block an oil sands pipeline, and 11 people are arrested. One of the workers gets angry about it, asking who will put their life on the line to unclog the pipe Greenpeace has blocked, and that it sure as hell won’t be the president of Shell. Kate hears about another death – a contractor was in his trucks, and one of the heavy haulers drove over it, crushing him.
Lindsay writes
an article for a grassroots paper, giving the inside perspective on working at the oil sands. Kate considers doing a comic about it for them. Lindsay later wonders if she made a mistake writing her article, as many of the comments are critical, including many from women which Lindsay did not expect.
Kate sees a
video on YouTube of Celina Harpe, an elder in the Cree community of
Fort McKay, talking about the effect of the oil sands on the First Nation. Kate had not realised when she arrived there that Fort McKay was a First Nation, nor that it was so close to Syncrude. She thinks about how she’s not the president of Shell, but she’s still working there, and she can’t extract herself from having come.
At another safety meeting, the staff are down the safety pyramid, which has different levels: at the base it has at-risk behaviours, then near misses, then minor incidents, and it all leads to a major incident or a fatality.
Kate receives a phone call from a reporter at the Globe and Mail who had seen her comics about the oil sands. She asks several leading questions about her experience as a woman at the remote sites and the harassment, but Kate feels uncomfortable giving her examples. She later tells Lindsay that she couldn’t talk to the reporter as she felt like she just wanted gossip, and that the story was already written before she called.
The leering of one of the other workers bothers Kate in the lunchroom, and she tells Lindsay about her assaults. Lindsay is horrified that Mike and Brian laughed at her when she told them about it. Lindsay tells her that it happened to her in university as well.
Kate calls her parents to tell them that she’s finally paid off her student loan, but she needs to keep working at the site because now she has no money. She’s going to try making it as a cartoonist, and her parents are unimpressed.
Kate notices that Ryan is acting strangely, being absent a lot and not doing his work, and it can’t fully be explained by his recent divorce. She hears about other workers who are taking cocaine and behaving strangely too. She asks Ryan if he’s ok and he brushes it off. Kate contemplates the safety pyramid again. She finds a piece of paper on Ryan’s desk with an appointment for the employee assistance program. Emily later tells her that Ryan has left suddenly, and that they need to figure things out until a replacement is found.
Kate wonders why there are so many safety meetings but none have ever talked about drugs or alcohol. Her coworkers say that everyone knows why there is so much of both, and that the company can’t have safety meetings about illegal activities anyway.
Kate finally gets to leave the oil sands and go home. Her colleague Norman gives her prints of some of his photos of the northern lights as a leaving present, including one of a rainbow. Before she leaves, the company organises a staff photograph with all the workers on the site. Kate sees the man who assaulted her the second time, and he recognises her but can’t remember her name or who she is, and asks her how it’s going.
Kate trains her replacement, and finds out that she’s earning more than her despite not having any experience in tools. She complains to John about it, and finally rants about all her shitty treatment in the oil sands. She goes to see Gary in the head office, and demands her full bonus, which was going to be docked because she was leaving. Gary tells her it’s company policy. She tells him about the harassment, and he claims she could have come to them about it, but she fires back that he knows she couldn’t have. Gary agrees to give her the bonus. Her colleagues organise a going-away barbecue, and even Mike attends.
Back in Nova Scotia, Kate is reunited with her family. While out enjoying the seaside air, she chats to a farmer who tells her he’s keeping a field for his son who is working out west in case he ever comes back and wants to build a house. A man called Lauchie visits the house before moving west himself, and tells them there’s something for everyone out there and that the young people have everything they want. Out in Halifax with friends, she and Becky see a man from one of the camps, who tells Becky that they had a bet on who would sleep with her first. Their friends who haven’t worked in the oil sands can’t believe they’d let a man talk to them like that.
In the book’s afterword, Kate talks about how the book chronicles her specific experience at a specific time. She is wary of sensationalism of her story, especially because sexual assault is so common that it’s not actually sensational. She notes that neither of the men who raped her probably consider it to have been rape. She is also critical of the treatment of Indigenous people, and says the YouTube video of Celina Harpe was a “sword that cut through my ignorance”. We also find out that Becky died of cancer, and that her former coworkers pooled money together to send to her.

2023.06.02 07:17 dingo8mybaby__ To sell or not to sell?
Hi,
We live in Tas and are at an impasse of what to do now. I understand that we are in a very privileged position here.
We own a home in the north of the state ($315k owing, valued at $610k) which we rent out and it covers the mortgage. We rent a relatives house ($220p/w with all power, water, rates etc included) in the South of the state. I bring in $880/fortnight (I am a part-time stay at home mum) and my husband brings in $4100/fortnight. Our expenses are $3k/fortnight. No savings, deposits, emergency funds as we have just used them all to pay off all our other debts (car loans, credit card, vet bills & IVF treatments) so now our only debt is the current mortgage.
We have a goal to live rurally in the south of the state, growing our own food and moving towards off grid living so moving back to the North isn't an option for us. If you were in our situation, what would you do?
1) Sell North house ($610k) and use profits ($270k) as deposit for house in South ($700k). This would leave us with ~$2500 spare a fortnight to go towards savings/emergency funds and other unexpected costs.
2) Keep North house and buy/build in South ($850k) leaving ~$200/fortnight to go towards savings/emergency funds and other unexpected costs.
3) Keep North house and continue renting longer term to build up savings (potential to save ~$50k in a year provided no large spending/bills). The house we rent now is small but does provide us with a local park and backyard however it is in a rough area.
Any advice would be appreciated. We've never been in this good of a financial situation before and are lost with all the options.
